The Norwegian duo of Henriette Motzfeldt and Catharina Stoltenberg, now based between Oslo and Copenhagen, return this spring with Big city life—a new album out May 23 on Escho. Built from fragments of dreams, conversations, and passing thoughts, their music functions like collage: voices loop, break, and multiply; synths shimmer and splinter; rhythms emerge and dissolve. What binds it all is their uniquely tactile sense of storytelling—personal yet abstract, naïve and knowing all at once.
Their 2021 debut Believer (XL Recordings) introduced a sonic world where classical composition techniques mingled with glitch, trap, and art pop. Since then, they’ve moved freely between formats: from the surreal hyperpop fantasia ALLINA, to the choral minimalism of Tidligere den dagen, performed with vocal ensemble GAEA and released on their own imprint, Shopping. Whether soundtracking a fashion show or composing for contemporary dance, Smerz move fluidly across contexts, maintaining a voice that’s unmistakably theirs.
